Questions for Interviews
For Casino Staff
1. How was your business going for the previous year?
2. Are you concerned about the situation? What are you going to do about it?
3. Now, more and more investors are aiming at countries like Philippine, Korea for developing gaming industry. What do you think about it? How do you manage to attract external investment?
For Visitors:
What attracts you here?
(If you are a gambler) how often do you come to Macau for gambling?
Will you still choose Macau for entertainment considering the rise of other countries’ gaming industry, such as, Korea, Philippine, and Vietnam? Will you go to one of those?
For Professionals:
1. The casino revenue has been on the decline since last May. So far, it has dropped so fast that we can’t help wonder how this happened and what’s behind this? (do you think the anti-corruption campaign in the mainland China has something to do with that? If not, what is it?)
2. The significance of Macau’s economic diversification has been stressed by the Chinese Central government for years. But it seems that it still stays where it was. Why it still remains unresolved? What are the major obstacles?
3. Some people say that Macau has been overprotected and that the people here lack the consciousness of crisis. Do you agree with that? Is it possible to embrace the talents from outside so as to move Macau people to compete and create?
4. The recession of Macau’s gaming industry has forced it to diversify. Now, it’s developing meetings and exhibitions. But it’s definitely far from being enough. What else can help it get out of this depressing state?
5. What can we learn from other countries with similar characteristics? As we know, Luxembourg, with the No.1 GDP in the world, has the same number of population with Macau. Apart from gaming industry, it also develops manufacturing. Its iron and steel industry holds one third of the whole industry with a world-famous reputation. Can we draw a lesson from it or from others?
Invitation Letter
Dear Prof. XXX,
We are student journalists in the graduate program in the Department of Communication at the University of Macau. We are working on a story about The Remarkable Shrink of Macau Gambling for our class taught by Prof. Mike Chinoy, the former CNN Asia correspondent. The story might also appear in U.S.-China Today (http://www.uschina.usc.edu/), an online publication from the University of Southern California's U.S.-China Institute. For this reason, we wish to get some in-depth ideas about the gambling in Macau. Would it be possible for us to speak with you? If you have time in the next few days, we would be very grateful.
Thank you very much!
Sincerely
Akon, Summer and Yvonne
